My name is Sasha and I live in the Adelaide Hills along with my husband and children.
I was thrown into the world of low protein cooking when my daughter was diagnosed with the Metabolic Disorder, Phenylketonuria (PKU) on the newborn screening test. I can still remember the phone call like it was yesterday and the panicked drive to the hospital wondering what everything meant.
I have always had a love for cooking and being creative. When the PKU bombshell was dropped into our lap, I made my daughter a promise. Never would she feel like she was missing out because of her diagnosis and that her PKU would not define who she was.
With the love for my daughter, came the inspiration to push the boundaries of low protein cooking and the courage to venture into the world of children's literature.
As a mother of a child with a dietary condition, I saw firsthand the challenges faced when it came time to start school. Not only were there the normal mixed emotions about starting school, but the additional challenges faced with a child who had a dietary condition.
My experience inspired me to write Sally’s Lunchbox which I hope will help young children understand they are not alone and that it is okay to be different.
I hope by sharing my recipes and helpful tips, it will help you on your low protein journey.
